Why we mow the lawn.

To mow or not to mow, that is the question…..?

Well, of course, I would say it’s essential wouldn’t I but there are really good reasons why it is necessary.

So firstly, a properly cut lawn with stripes is a thing of beauty. It makes your garden look tidy and neat. A nicely manicured, even cut lawn gives your garden an orderly appearance. An evenly growing lawn will have equal access to sun and water.

Next, mowing on a regular basis keeps your lawn healthy and helps to keep weeds at bay. Regularly collecting the debris on your grass whether it be leaves or other things, it helps to stop disease spreading into your grass.

As with most other plants, cutting your grass improves its strength and resilience. Every cut increases the thickness of your whole lawn making it look more lush and full. As your grass becomes denser this will increase coverage and crowd out existing weeds and allow no space for new weeds to take hold.

It is important to get the mowing height right. As I suggested in my last post, start cutting in the spring on a higher setting and then gradually reduce it to 20-30mm for an ordinary lawn. Cutting your lawn too short, too early will weaken it, encourage shallow rooting and make it more susceptible to weeds and moss.

Now that spring is well and truly upon us.

Spring is well and truly arrived, and it brings with it the normal English unpredictable spring weather – baking sun one moment to freezing cold with hailstones the next! By carrying out a little lawn care now you will save your time later in the year and have beautiful grass to be proud of.

There are five simple steps to follow:

Start mowing with caution. Begin by mowing longer than normal and gradually as the weather warms up, lower the cutting height

Get rid of weeds and moss

Feed your lawn

Aerate to deal with compacted soil

Over-seed

If you need any assistance with any of these tasks, Fishers Farm Lawncare are ready to provide some help.
