The benefits of aeration

What is aeration? Lawn aeration involves perforating the soil with small holes to allow air, water and nutrients to penetrate the grass roots.

Why aerate? It alleviates soil compaction which inhibits the lawn from growing properly. Areation helps the roots grow deeply and promotes a stronger, more vigorous lawn.

Solid or Hollow tine? Solid tines simply poke holes into the ground. allowing air to reach the roots giving a stronger and healthier plant. Whereas hollow tines remove a core or plug of grass and soil, this is mainly used where lawns have heavy use and become compacted. The removal of the plugs helps to ease this compaction.

When to aerate? The best time for aeration is during the growing season, when the grass can heal and fill in any open areas. Ideally aerate the lawn with a cool season in the spring or autumn.

What to do after aeration? It’s good practice to feed a lawn after aeration. This will help to put nutrients into your grass roots and help promote a healthy lawn.

We charge £40.00 for a lawn up to 50m2 for solid and £50 for hollow tine. If you are interested and would like a no obligation quote to aerate your lawn, please contact us.

The benefits of autumn feed

Now is the time to prepare your lawn for winter. Steps you take now will ensure that your grass grows even greener next year!

Continue mowing you lawn while it is still mild but remember to cut it a bit longer or the lawn could soon be overgrown by moss.

Fertiliser in autumn should be high in potash and phosphates as this will help strengthen your lawn and reduce frost damage.

For older lawn which are prone to moss, it’s not too late now to scarify. This will give your lawn time to recover while it is still mild and with regular water before winter sets in.

Don’t forget to continue raking up leaves and broken twigs to prevent these from decaying on your lawn as they could spread disease.

Now’s the perfect time to turf

Turf can be laid at any time of year but with the weather still mild now is a perfect time to achieve good results.

4 reasons why now is the perfect time:

1. The weather is not too hot and not too cold, and with rain little and often.

2. The soil is still warm so this encourages good root growth.

3. Less foot traffic so it gives your lawn the opportunity of settling in. So by the time you get to summer you have a very established lawn.

4. Turf laid now can be nurtured throughout the winter and spring periods and be in tip top condition for the summer.

If you listen to the old-school gardeners, they’ll always tell you that turf should be laid in autumn and winter for best results. So contact me if you would like a new lawn laid. I use the best fine tilth topsoil and exceptional quality turf to ensure a good finish.
